Through the course of my project, I slowly realized the impact of what I was teaching had on the kids. At first the sessions would simply start out with ice breakers or fun games, but as time progressed I started to get into deep conversations with these kids. These children were very interested in the problems our society faces and ways to solve these issues. The day I knew my project had made a significant impact was when this little girl, Adeline, came up to me saying, “Girls don’t have to be saved by boys, girls can save the boys too! One day when I grow up I want to be the first female astronaut in my family because girls can do anything!” This almost brought tears to my eyes, since I was able to help this little girl realize her potential in what she could accomplish. In today’s society, it is important to teach children that they have the potential to do anything; whether a man wants to be a homemaker or a woman wants to be a mechanic, gender does not define their capabilities. As we discussed topics regarding women in other countries, the kids were readily able to see how many more opportunities they had. This led to them being grateful for the education and resources they had.
